mesic soil moisture. Full sun to part shade. Gray to red
twigs in winter with red flowers in early spring before
leaves. Red fruit. Brilliant orange- red fall color.
Ascending branch pattern. Grows in swamps or moist woods.
Found in northeast and southeast Minnesota. Very high
wildlife value. Zone 3-6.
Acer saccharinum Silver Maple
Ht. 60-80'. W 40-50'. Tolerates most soils. Prefers wet to
moist soils. Full sun to partial shade. Very wide, open
canopy. Flood tolerant. Fast growing. Found in flood plains
and lakeshores. Zone 3-7.
Acer saccharum Sugar Maple
Ht. 60' W 40-50'. Grows on deep, well-drained loam soils.
Full sun or shade. Upright oval to rounded form. Dark green
foliage turning brilliant yellow-orange-red in fall. Protect
from wind. Sap used for syrup. Very high wildlife value. One
of Minnesota's finest over story trees. Zone 3-5.
Acer spicatum Mountain Maple
Ht. 20-30' W 15-25'. Loam soils. Requires moist soil. Flood
intolerant. Full sun or shade. Understory shrub or small
tree. Irregular, upright form. Grows in cool rich woods and
often found on rocky slopes. Orange to bright red fall
color. Very high wildlife value. Zone 2-4. Acer
x freemanii Autumn Blaze Maple
Ht. 50' W 40'. Adaptable to most soils. Tolerates clay and drought. Full
sun to partial shade. Long -lasting, brilliant red to red-orange fall color.
Fast growth rate. A natural hybrid between Silver and Red Maple. Zone 3-7.
Alnus rugosa Speckled Alder
Ht. 15-20' W 15-20'. Prefers deep loams to loamy sands.
Requires wet to mesic soil moisture. Full sun or light
shade. Flood tolerant. Purple-black fruit on bright orange
stems persisting into winter. Found along stream banks, low
wet woods, and open floodplain. Zone 2-5.
Amelanchier arborea Downy Serviceberry
Ht. 15-25' W 10-15'. Prefers well-drained (mesic to dry)
soils. Full sun to part shade. Multi-stemmed tree occurring
in rich woods, thickets, and hillsides of northeast and
southeast Minnesota. White flowers in May. Edible blue-black
fruit in June. Yellow fall color. High wildlife value. Zone
3.
Amelanchier laevis Allegheny Serviceberry
Ht. 15-25' W 10-15'. Loamy sand to loam. Prefers mesic soil
moisture. Full sun to part shade. Large shrub or small
multi-stemmed tree. Found on moist hillsides and cool rich
deciduous woods. White flowers followed with reddish-purple
fruit. High wildlife value. Zone 3-4.
Betula alleghaniensis Yellow Birch
Ht. 60-70' W 30'. Loam soils. Best on moist, sandy loam soils.
Full sun to part shade. Found in cool moist woods in
northern Minnesota. Important timber tree. Yellowish-bronze, exfoliating bark.. Beautiful yellow fall color.
Resistant to birch borer. Very high wildlife value. Zone

Betula pumila var. glandulifera Bog Birch
Ht. 6-9' W 6-9'. Wet-mesic soils. Fine textured, shrubby species with small
thick leaves. Cone-like catkins. Grows in bogs and edge of
conifer swamps. Good red fall color. Tendency to colonize.
